Join us Friday afternoon, June 3, 2011 for a very special tour at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The National Ignition Facility (NIF), a $5 billion project of the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration and the world’s largest and most energetic laser, has the goal of achieving nuclear fusion and energy gain in the laboratory for the first time.
By creating, in essence, a miniature star on Earth, NIF will enable Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s NIF & Photon Science Directorate to accomplish its three missions: enable a better understanding of the complex physics of nuclear weapons without underground testing; provide scientists with the physics understanding necessary to create fusion ignition and energy gain for future energy production; and as a national user facility, enable academic collaborators to explore new frontiers in astrophysics, materials science, nuclear science, and many other scientific disciplines.

Tour Details
We will meet no later than 12:30 pm at the LLNL West Gate Badge Office where we will check-in and receive our security badges. We will then drive our personal vehicles around to East Gate entrance for LLNL-escorted access and a short tour of the Discovery Center. We will then walk from the Discovery Center to the NIF for a 90-min. tour. Following the NIF tour, we will walk back to our vehicles at the East Gate entrance.
This event is limited to 40 participants on a first come, first served basis. All participants must be 18 years or older by June 3.
Required Information
The NIF is a secure facility. All visitors are required to submit a completed security questionnaire for access. Participants must register at Eventbrite and submit the questionnaire below no later than May 1, 2011.

NOTE: LLNL/EBHAN cannot make any guarantee that individual security clearances will be processed in time for the tour. Anyone not having clearance by June 1, 2011 will be notified and the registration fee refunded.
